Pratt Men Dominate ITA Regional Championships

This was a historic weekend for Pratt's Men's Tennis Program. Following the best spring that the team has had since it was brought back 5 years ago, the team has already secured the best Fall season that the team has seen in that stretch. Head Coach, Jeret Johnson and Assistant Coach, Eli Truhe have built what is looking to be one of the best teams Pratt has ever fielded.

Going into the Fall ITA Regional Tournament, the Beavers were expected to do very well. In the Singles Bracket, the team was able to secure 4 of the 8 top seeds. Kenneth Rabinad (1), Kenta Kawada (5), Daniel Blinov (6), and Tiaan Nelson (7) were the players seeded. All 8 seeds were given a first-round bye. Three of the four Pratt players who were not seeded in the tournament managed first round wins (Sam Dinneen, Matthew Harris, and Thio Tshivhase).

Eddie Westfall was the only first round loser that the team had in the tournament. Despite his first-round struggle, Westfall was able to recover well, winning the consolation title with wins over Seward's Theo Cabre, Juan Luzuriaga, and Cowley's Guilherme Coelho.

Pratt had five of the eight players in the quarter finals of the singles draw (Kenneth Rabinad Vila, Sam Dinneen, Tiaan Nelson, Kenta Kawada, and Daniel Blinov) and three of the four players in the semifinals (Kenneth Rabinad Vila, Kenta Kawada, Daniel Blinov). Eventually, the final found Pratt's Kenneth Rabinad Vila facing off with Cowley's Haruki Okude. Pratt fell in the final 4-6, 4-6.

The Doubles Draw was very impressive for our Men as well. Two of the four top seeds were Pratt teams (Rabinad Vila/Dinneen and Kawada/Tshivhase). All four of the Pratt teams taken to the tournament made appearances in the quarterfinals. Three of the teams advanced to the semifinals and Pratt met Pratt in the finals! Daniel Blinov and Eddie Westfall faced off with Kenta Kawada and Thio Tshivhase in the finals with Tshivhase/Kawada winning 6-2, 7-6(2).

With their Regional Championship, Tshivhase and Kawada have earned an automatic bid into the ITA Fall National Championships in Rome, GA later this semester. There will likely be some other Pratt players receiving Wildcard entries into the tournament, but those will be announced at a later date.
