Fort Scott holds off Beavers to claim Saturday sweep
FORT SCOTT, Kan. – The Pratt Community College baseball team faced a familiar opponent on Saturday, as they went against Fort Scott Community College for another doubleheader, this time on the road. The Greyhounds were able to break open a late tie to take game one, 9-3, then used a pair of big innings to break open game two for the 9-4 victory.
In game one, Fort Scott (2-2) scored two in the first and another in the second to quickly jump out to a 3-0 lead. Pratt (4-2) began to chip away in the third inning. Owen Schmidt drove in the first run with a grounder to shortstop that resulted in both an RBI and error. Colby Gomez then added an RBI groundout to third leaving FSCC ahead 3-2.
It remained 3-2 until the sixth inning when a Landon Cochran sacrifice fly evened the score at 3-all.
Fort Scott then put the game out of reach with six runs in the home half of the sixth inning to claim the 9-3 victory.
FSCC held the 11-4 edge in hits, with Aiden McNulty accounting for three hits for the Beavers. On the mound, Oswaldo Wilson started and went the first three innings to get the no decision, allowing three earned runs and added three strikeouts. Hunter Mitchell tossed two scoreless innings, along with three strikeouts. Vincent Bouchard (0-1) worked the sixth inning and ended up with the loss, allowing six runs (one earned).
In game two, the Beavers opened the game strong plating two in the first inning. Klayton Glaspy provided the offense with a two-run single to bring in Cochran and McNulty.
The Greyhounds answered with five runs in the first and then three more in the second to take the 8-2 lead. The Beavers got a run back in the third when Gomez hit his second home run of the season and Carter Allen drove in a run in the sixth.
Fort Scott closed the scoring with a run in the sixth to claim the 9-4 victory.
FSCC held the 11-6 edge in hits, with six Beavers accounting for the hits. On the mound, Colin Redeker (0-1) started and went the first inning, allowing five runs and had a strikeout. Noah Esparza tossed the next inning and allowed three runs. Laken Kelley tossed two scoreless innings with a strikeout. Kyler Brecheisen went the next 1.2 innings, allowing one earned run with a strikeout. Schmidt closed the sixth inning, getting the final out.
PCC will remain on the road this coming week as they will play at Kansas Wesleyan JV on Saturday, February 14 for another doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
